Public Health Nurse

Wabun Tribal Council

Wabun Tribal Council is seeking a dedicated and skilled Public Health Nurse to deliver community-based public health services to our First Nation communities: Brunswick House, Mattagami, Matachewan, Chapleau Ojibwe, and Beaver House. This role focuses on communicable disease control, prevention, and health promotion, while working in partnership with community health staff to improve overall wellness.

Duties and Responsibilities

    • Communicable Disease Control & Management:
      • Implement prevention, investigation, follow-up, and reporting of communicable diseases.
      • Support outbreak management and case contact tracing in accordance with public health protocols.
    • STBBI Program (Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections):
      • Provide education, testing, and follow-up care in collaboration with community health teams.
      • Promote prevention strategies and reduce stigma related to STBBIs.
    • Tuberculosis (TB) Program:
      • Conduct screening, monitoring, contact tracing, and treatment support for TB cases.
      • Maintain accurate reporting to appropriate health authorities.
        Communicable Disease Emergency Management:
      • Assist with planning, preparedness, and response activities for public health emergencies.
    • Environmental Public Health:
      • Collaborate with environmental health officers to address concerns such as water quality, air quality, food safety, and housing conditions affecting health.
    • Harm Reduction:
      • Promote harm reduction strategies, distribute supplies, and provide education on substance use and overdose prevention.

Qualifications

    • Education:
      • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution.
    • Registration:
      • Current registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
    • Experience:
      • Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in community or public health.
      • Experience working with Indigenous communities is an asset.

Other Requirements

    • Valid Ontario Class G Driver’s License.
    • Ability and willingness to travel extensively to Wabun Tribal Council communities.
    • Excellent communication, cultural competency, and interpersonal skills.
